Stephen W. (Warren) Meader (1892-1977) had his first book, The Black Buccaneer, published by Harcourt, Brace and Howe in 1920 as their first juvenile publication. His last novel, The Cape May Packet, was completed at age 77 in 1969. In his writing career he had a total of forty-three fiction books published by Harcourt. Mary Lystad in Twentieth Century Children’s Writers says, "Meader ... concentrated on adolescent and young adult male characters, their enterprises and their dreams. He wrote fast-moving and fast-reading mysteries, adventure and sports stories, and stories about young boys making the transition into adulthood." Everglades Adventure features Toby Morgan who moves to Fort Dallas, the original name of Miami, with his family in the 1870's. The plot involves hunting and fishing in the Everglades and encounters with alligators, Caloosa indians, and ruthless plume hunters.
