Balmer, Edwin and Wylie, Philip. WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE. New York: A. L. Burt Company, (no date). 344 p., 20 cm. Bound in red cloth.
When Worlds Collide made its first appearance as a serial in Blue Book Magazine running in six installments from September 1932 to February 1933. Balmer was the editor of the magazine and suggested the idea to Wylie who did the writing. The book was such a success that Balmer and Wylie quickly came up with a sequel, After Worlds Collide, which tells what happened to the survivors on the new planet. The many later editions of When Worlds Collide had different bindings and more modern dust jacket art - only this A. L. Burt edition looks almost identical to the first edition. When Worlds Collide was made into a movie in 1951 produced by George Pal for Paramount Pictures, directed by Rudolph Mate. The movie won an academy award for its special effects. In 2005 it was said to be in production again - directed by Stephen Sommers - to be released in 2008. |
